STAR-T Leadership Training
As the STAR-T model has continued to grow, developing strategic ways for agencies and communities to spread the “wildfire of resiliency” that are consistent with the uniqueness of each setting and coherent with the principles of the STAR-T model is a central goal for 2020. In collaboration with the leadership team of the Missoula County Attorney’s office, we have developed a 9-hour training process that will empower mid-level managers to be conduits for recognizing the impact of secondary trauma and encouraging post-traumatic growth in the workers they manage.
We access the supervision relationships that each manager is responsible for to integrate secondary trauma awareness skills as a part of the preventative work plan for each worker. The manager learns and practices this protocol in a closed management learning group in which we create a process-rich environment for leaders to understand the impact of secondary trauma on themselves. We teach and integrate the key components of the STAR-T model in this secure environment.
Skills learned in this training process:
How to integrate secondary trauma resiliency skills into each supervision relationship.
Understanding the dynamics of relationship-based management and the preventative resource this is for reducing work recidivism.
Increasing the ability to recognize and practice body awareness as a way to reduce secondary trauma.
Teaching and modeling resiliency skills that are well suited to the unique aspects of secondary trauma intrusion to each employee.
Learning how to welcome the vulnerability of the worker as you are supporting professional growth.
Developing work plans for staff that encourage post-traumatic growth rather than the intrusion of secondary trauma.
Inter-agency collaboration to create community-wide support.
These six 90-minute learning sessions can be spread out over the course of six months with integration activities that are practiced throughout the experience and reported back to the management group. The material can also be engaged in a two-day, 9-hour, retreat-style training process. Both of these delivery models require basic training in the STAR-T principles which is best facilitated by a three-hour STAR-T Facet One training. It is recommended that this be provided for the entire agency staff to begin the process of legitimating the reality of secondary trauma impact on the life of the workers and to establish a common agency language for the tracking of trauma and resiliency.
